French Dip

Cole’s French Dip

Did you know that two restaurants claim to have invented the French Dip sandwich?

Most likely you have heard of Philippe the Original, but unless you are a long time visitor of Downtown Los Angeles you might not know that Cole’s also claims to have invented the French Dip.

Both restaurants were opened in 1908. I have been going to Philippe’s since I was a kid and it is one of the places I always take out of towners when they are visiting, so obviously I like this place, a lot! For some reason, Cole’s had been off of my radar until recently.

Cole’s is located on 6th Street in a part of downtown that is undergoing a renaissance. So on a recent trip to downtown with my family; we made a visit to Cole’s.

Cole's

Cole’s operates out of its original 1908 location and as part of the ongoing rebirth of Downtown Los Angeles its owners remodeled Cole’s. I must say they did a good job. The restaurant has a very old timey vibe. There is great old school bar up front and an actual speakeasy in the back. Cole’s is a sit down restaurant as opposed to the counter service at Philippe’s. Our waiter at Cole’s was great. There are five meat selections to choose from for the French dip: pork, pastrami, USDS prime beef, turkey, or lamb. The cost is $12 for a French Dip which is more expensive than Philippe’s. Your sandwich comes with an atomic pickle spear, which was hot and tasty. We also ordered Garlic Fries. The garlic fires and the French Dip were a fantastic combination.

Even though Phillippe the Original also first opened in 1908, they moved to their current location in 1951. The place still feels really old school, with sawdust on the floor. Here you order your food at the large counter. Be prepared, lines are always long, but they move fast. Here the menu choice is vast compared to Cole’s, but of course everyone comes here for the French dip. The French dip costs $7.50, side of macaroni salad is $1.50 and lemonade is $.75. Not bad for 2016!

Philippe’s Dip

Well, I’m biased having eaten at Philippe’s my whole life. Plus I’m a sucker for “sweat’n, clear – your – sinus’s” hot mustard. So my vote goes to Philippe’s, but you gotta try them both for yourself and let me know which one is your favorite!
