Even though I live in Orange County, it’s nice to have a fun weekend day away from the usual. This past weekend we headed up to Beverly Hills for a day trip. Being foodies, we wanted to make sure lunch was our first priority. We selected Nate & Al’s Delicatessen on Beverly Blvd. I love a good Jewish delicatessen and we just don’t seem to have them in Orange County. Why? I’m not sure. If any Bubbes out there want to start a business, Orange County is the place!
Nate & Al’s is old school, just perfect; waitresses that have been working there since the beginning of time. Worn, brown, vinyl booths and clientele to match. We ordered the grilled Reuben Pastrami sandwich with onion rings. Oh so good, good as in tasty, not healthy. We split the sandwich, those of you that have been fortunate to eat at a Jewish deli knows that the sandwiches are humongous. Matzo Ball soups were being brought to the surrounding tables. If only, I could stuff another thing in my mouth!
Walking to the Paley Museum is about half a block across the street. The Paley Museum is a museum featuring the arts of television. The featured exhibit this weekend was Dorito Chip commercials that were aired during the Superbowl games. Admission is free and was fun to check out.
From the Paley Museum we did what every good tourist does and walked Rodeo Blvd. Shopped? More like window shopped and checked out the expensive cars parked along the curbs. Since my bank account wouldn’t let me do any purchasing we decided to drive through the neighborhoods of Beverly Hills checking out the mansions and trying to guess who lives in them. We did have a destination in mind: The Greystone Mansion. Just like the name indicates, the mansion which is made of grey colored stone belonged to the Greystone family and was donated to the city of Beverly Hills as a park. The mansion sits on 18.5 acres overlooking the city of Beverly Hills, Century City and Los Angeles in the distance. The gardens with secret paths, fountains and lily pads are a serene escape from the bustle of urban life. Admission is free, just google for directions.
The only cost of the day was gas for our car and the lunch we split. For a minimal amount of money we discovered some pretty fantastic places in Beverly Hills.
