I’ve been to Tucson, Arizona a handful of times. At first, Tucson’s nickname, “The Dirty T” lived up to itself. It is strange to see front yards of dirt and cactus. The public streets were and still are, in much need of repair. Nothing like Orange County with blue sky and water and immaculate front yards kept lush and green by our gardeners. Do I ever need to get my tires aligned? Barely a pothole in site.
We are certainly not in Newport Beach Dorothy! But alas, Tucson has its moments. It seems every time I visit, some kind of new restaurant has popped up. Downtown Tucson is getting vibrant. Old dilapidated buildings are getting some spit and shine. Once a homeless gathering, downtown is being replaced by young college students, professionals and shall I say it? Hipsters!
The old character of the buildings remain and are sought after by hip and trendy new restaurants, bars and boutiques.
I have eaten at a few of these establishments, such as Reilly Craft Pizza & Drink. The ambiance is cozy, and inviting. A huge chandelier hangs below the wood beam ceiling. The lighting is set for relaxed conversation and the food is always on point. I seem to opt for one of their salads and a hand-tossed pizza. Of course a huge class of wine must accompany that as well.
Another restaurant that I will be returning to in the fall is called, Maynards Kitchen. It is located in the old train station. This is where you come to celebrate an occasion. Duck poutine and a juicy steak with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon? Yes, thank you. The food is outstanding as well as the service. Maynards also has a little market that is attached, Maynard’s Market. In the mornings you can pick up your coffee and a baked good. In the evenings they hold events such as Wine and Beer Tours (tastings) usually from 6 to 8pm.
I am excited to try a few more restaurants in the Ol’Dirty T. Maybe I’ll get a chance on my next visit. I suggest if you haven’t checked out Downtown Tucson, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed and like me you’ll think that Tucson’s nickname might not be as deserved.
