What shall I drink? That is the question I pose every time I enter a bar. Okay, I know that sounds like I may have a drinking problem, but I assure you I don’t. I just like to try new things and why not try a new cocktail to break up the usual Gin & Tonic.

My husband constantly listens to Sports Radio and in one of the shows he was listening to; the host mentioned that the favorite cocktail of Mexico is Paloma’s, he relayed this information to me.

What is this, something I didn’t know about? What is this Paloma? I had to know!

Thank God for Google. I immediately entered Paloma cocktail and low and behold images and recipes appeared.

First of all, the paloma (Spanish for “dove”) is Mexico’s most beloved cocktail.

Secondly, it is most commonly prepared by mixing tequila with a grapefruit-flavored soda such as: Squirt, Fresca or Jarritos and is served on the rocks with a lime wedge.

jarritosCount me in! 3 ingredients and sounds refreshing. How come I have never heard of this before?

I live in Southern California and consider myself quite knowledgeable of Mexican culture. How could I have missed this? Okay, time to correct myself and make this cocktail.

I decided that the grapefruit-soda I should use is Jarritos. I chose Jarritos because I have seen the brand in the Mercados (Mexican markets) by my house. If I’m going to do this, I better do it authentic and right! Now Jarritos come in many different flavors but this recipe calls for the grapefruit flavor.

Okay, I have pretty good tequila in my bar at home, so I head to the Mercado and pick up the grapefruit flavor Jarritos, I buy 8 bottles. Hey I’m optimistic that I’m going to like it and will want to drink more than one.

My underage kid spots the Jarritos on the counter and pours him the soda over ice. “Hey mom, this stuff is good!” he announces.

My turn;

One part tequila,

Three parts grapefruit soda.

I pour it over the high-ball filled with ice and squeeze a lime wedge in it.

Looks good, as I take a sip I understand why it’s one of Mexico’s favorite cocktails. Cold, refreshing and can go head to head with a margarita.

I’m happy now that I am in the know. I am also happy that when I enter a bar I can order a Paloma!!

If you want to make these at home, the ingredients are below!
